How to Read a Three-Card Tarot Spread
By Selena (Atelier Tarot) ·
Read past-present-future, situation-obstacle-advice, and two-choice tarot spreads with a simple three-step method and a real example.
You’ve memorized the card meanings, yet when three cards are on the table you freeze. That’s because single cards are words and a spread is a sentence. Here is a three-step method for reading one card and a way to weave three cards into one story.
Reading a single card in three steps
Step 1. Intuitive impression (image and atmosphere)
Before recalling any meaning, look at the picture. Is the overall color bright or dark? Where are the figures looking, and what are their expressions? Is the mood calm or tense? Your first impression is a more accurate hint than you might think.
Step 2. Core symbols and keywords
Recall the basic meaning of the card’s suit (element), number, and rank. For Major Arcana, use the card’s key keywords; for Minor Arcana, use the [element] + [number/rank] formula (explained in the four tarot suits).
Step 3. Fit it to the question
Finally, reinterpret the keywords for the area of your question (love, money, work) and the card’s direction (upright or reversed). The same Ace of Wands is “the spark of a passionate attraction” in a love question and “an opportunity for a new project” in a work question.
Reading by topic
| Topic | Focus | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Love | emotional exchange, the other person’s feelings, where the relationship can go | decide whether a card describes “their feelings” or “the relationship now” |
| Money & career | practical results, timing of investments, job changes and contracts | Pentacles (money) with Wands (work) is usually a positive flow |
| Advice | the attitude to take and what to watch out for | read reversed cards as “problems to be careful about” |
The most common three-card spreads
① Past – Present – Future
The most basic spread for seeing change over time. Our love reading uses it.
- Past: the causes or background behind the current situation
- Present: the energy most active right now
- Future: where things go if the current flow continues
Tip: Look at the direction of change. A dark past and bright future tell a story of recovery; the reverse is a warning that something needs to change now.
② Situation – Obstacle – Advice
A problem-solving spread. Our money and career reading uses it.
- Current Situation: where you stand
- Obstacle: what blocks your goal (outside circumstances or your own fears)
- Advice: the attitude and action to get past the obstacle
Tip: Read the advice card as the answer to the obstacle card. If the obstacle is the Two of Swords (a decision on hold) and the advice is The Chariot (drive), the message is “stop deliberating and commit.”
③ Two-choice (A – B – Advice)
For when you are torn between two options. Try it in the two-choice reading.
Tip: Rather than simply asking which card is “better,” look at what experience each choice brings. Even the option with a harder card might offer growth you need now.
A real example
Question: Should I keep working at my current company? (Situation – Obstacle – Advice)
- Situation: Eight of Pentacles (upright) – steadily building skills
- Obstacle: Four of Cups (upright) – boredom and apathy toward the work
- Advice: Page of Wands (upright) – the curiosity of learning something new
Reading: Your skills are growing steadily, but losing interest in a repetitive routine is the biggest problem. Rather than leaving right away, the cards suggest reviving your curiosity by taking on a new skill or project.
A checklist for the whole spread
- How many Major Arcana are there? (More means a bigger life theme.)
- Does one suit repeat? (That is the stage of your question.)
- How many cards are reversed? (More means delays or inner work first.)
- What answer does the last card (future or advice) give to the cards before it?
After checking these four points, summarize the spread in one sentence. That sentence is your reading.
Selena says: Getting the cards to talk to each other matters more than memorizing them. Listen to what the three cards are saying to one another.
